The salmon has been a tradition with the Canucks - well since 1994 playoffs.
Ever since Detroit Red Wings fans started the octopus thing in the 1950's, fans from other rinks have been doing all kinds of other shit. Florida Panthers threw rats onto the ice because a player killed a rat in the dressing room before a game they won - it spurred them on to many a wins. The Detroit thing with the Octopus was because back then, it took 8 wins to take the cup (8 tentacles of the octopus).
The salmon signifies the west coast, the legendary struggles of the Pacific Salmon, etc. I remember the salmon being thrown during game 6 of the 1994 Stanley Cup finals (Pacific Coliseum.
I just hope today's salmon was not a fricken farmed Atlantic Salmon, but the real thing.
