My opinion is that crowd sourcing is meant to be the cheapest method of obtaining a logo. Some designs are astonishing, but they are few and far in between. I think you nailed it when you said "you get what you pay for".
If you find someone good, please pass on their name, I am getting close to needing one too (not there yet).
