I just picked up a 4S and the battery life was pretty crappy. It would drop 20% overnight!
Turns out apps are still running in the background...

To close an app completely, double clicking the home button will bring up a list of apps that are open. Press & hold the icon and when they start wiggling, you can "delete" them from the list of currently running apps.

Hopefully my battery life improves significantly now...

Edit: Definitely had a software bug on my phone - something was STILL running in the background; phone wouldn't go into standby. My "usage" & "standby" timers were very close, so something was wrong. Apple gave me a new phone and fortunately, this new one works fine!
