Depends on what ingredients you're looking for. If caffeine and choline (2 of the most effective pwo ingredients) are all you want, then something like Assault is fine. Just know that you are paying an extra $1.50 or so per serving for lots of other stuff you don't need.
IMO the most effective PWO ingredients are the ones that stimulate your mind and increase focus. Specifically the 'mind/muscle connection'. IE you want every single rep to be effective and in good form, even when fatigued. Those are:
Caffeine (many effects, mostly as brain stimulant)
Tyrosine (synergistic with caffeine, precursor to dopamine and adrenaline)
Choline (preferably GPC or CDP form) (precursor to acetylcholine, increases focus and 'mind/muscle connection')
ALCAR (Acetyl L-Carnitine) (fuel for the cells at a mitochondrial level - increases work output, synergistic with choline, increases focus and mind/muscle connection)
Racetams (Oxiracetam or Aniracetam, Piracetam is the oldest but weakest) (basically gives choline a huge 'turbo boost'. Really, your brain is in 'turbo mode' and everything works 'better'. Incredibly synergistic with choline and all cholinergenics)
Others: Huperzine-A, Vinpocetine, Rhodiola, Yohimbine, Ephedrine (depending on goals)
IMO a good preworkout stack would be
Caffeine 200-300mg
Tyrosine 500-1000mg
Alpha GPC 600-900mg
ALCAR 750-1000mg
Oxiracetam 750mg (will try aniracetam today)
NO preworkout is going to give you this much of each dosage, so really the only way is to do it yourself. Additionally, take 5g creatine and 8g beta alanine daily.
