I've run into lots of people online. Some are friendly some aren't obviously. If a person comes up to you and gives you a salute (key \ on keyboard) that means they're friendly. You can then give the salute back to signify the same. Of course, you don't know if this is just for show, they might shoot you in the head after and take your stuff. Anybody who I ran into giving this signal hasn't killed me yet.
During night time I was out of ammo and saw a red flare out in the distance, so I decided to run full speed to it. There were two guys there and I just stood behind them while they covered me looking for ammo and exploring. So there is a lot of interaction with humans. When you first spawn you usually spawn near the coast, so your bound to run into the some players here and there. I haven't made my way more towards the middle or top of the map, I haven't even scratched the surface yet.
I also set the direct chat function on my mouse to allow talking on the mic. Only players near your proximity can hear you. Another thing if you hate the blur affect like I did when your moving, turn off post processing effects...I couldn't stand it!
Tos'd, there is dozens and dozens of servers. The max is 50 people per server, a lot of them are always full. You're able to find servers easily. It's gaining popularity every day obviously.
