New? I could get an Audi A4, A5, TT, BMW 1 series, 3 series, Infiniti G37, Lexus IS, Mazda RX-8, Mercedes-Benz C-class coupe, Mini Cooper S/JCW, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Nissan 370Z, Subaru WRX, WRX STI. Almost all of which I would prefer to the Golf R.
40K can get a lot..dive into the world of 2-3 year old used cars and you can get a hell of a bang for your buck. Hell, even at 20K (for a late model used car) I could probably find something that equals the Golf R in terms of performance, quality of materials, and overall fit and finish.
I've bought a lot of used cars at an even lower price point, so I've learned to squeeze every dollar out of my 5-10K.
