STI's and Evo's have the prestige of being core-hearted rally cars. A Golf does not. I'd compare the R to a Mazdaspeed. You'd only get those cars if you were a straight up VW or Mazda fan. If you're looking at amount of car per dollar, then kwy below has a whole line up of cars that would make more sense to get. Again, not saying it's a bad car.. and ultimately, to each their own.

40K can get a lot..dive into the world of 2-3 year old used cars and you can get a hell of a bang for your buck. Hell, even at 20K (for a late model used car) I could probably find something that equals the Golf R in terms of performance, quality of materials, and overall fit and finish.
