I have a LOT of experience with e36's, and i can almost guarantee 100% that your problem is a big vacuum leak, its not that serious but your car will use more gas, shake when started, and low torque at low rpm. Depending on your issue,it should be simple to fix

As the guy above me stated , the ccv valve might be at cause but dont buy a new one, just clean it.
