The hardware doesn't matter as long as it's competitively matched with others. It's the software/hardware integration and ease-of-use that matters. As much as I hate the arrogance of Apple today, iPad is still unmatched in term of convenience and easy to use.
I live very far away from my parents, and every time I visit them, I spend easily 30% of the time setting up computers for them and teach them how to use them. I remember how my dad took down notes just so he could use Skype to video-con with me.
Last year, I got him an iPad2. They learned how to use Facetime to call me in under a minute. Downloaded a few apps that dedicate to watch those Taiwanese news they wanted and boom... magic happened. They no longer spend hours and hours trying to learn a new function.
From the MS presentation liveblog, I saw no mention of any dedication of user-friendliness and any software integrated to make the most out of the hardware. It's just another device MS designed so it could sell more Win8 licenses.

You're right , the ipad is great , but for what? Playing fart apps ? Browsing the web with no flash? I happen to own a ipad 2, and as soon as theses MS tablest come out, im selling it. Have you ever used the Zune software? It is amazing, i still use it even though i dint have a Zune anymore.When i bought my Zune, it had wifi sync, a touch pas and a 3.2 inch screen, there was no apple touch at the time, only the old busted Classic wih black and white screen. Microsoft has excellent technology, which is why they are nr1 globally and apple is but a snowflake on a mountain.
I appreciated apple up until they started their advertisment campaign based SOLELY on bad mouthing their competitors to make hemselves look good and stealing inovations from Cydia and Android and claiming novelty for themselves. The surface is a 100% USABLE computer, as opposed to my 700$ oversized ipad WHICH is now not included for updates by ios 6,but my 4s which has weaker specs is.
i hope apple dies in a fiery death, they certainly deserve it, rant out
