Didn't read all the replies but I'll say this:
Learn how to rev-match and heel-toe properly, and use your intuition. Whether or not you should use any of these techniques depends on your speed, traffic, gradient, etc...
Often I will downshift just one gear when if the light ahead just turned red because if it's just one gear I can do it without letting go of the gas...yes I am a lazy fuck.
Heel-toe is fairly useful when you're slowing down for turns WITHOUT stopping.
Try not to coast in neutral a lot, it COULD BE dangerous...although I do coast downhill to save gas if the road is clear.
