I cut off most of the stem part which leaves a hole at the base. I put the cover back on and invert. Makes a perfect sharps holder for used lancets.

Not sure how you're getting rid of your full sharps containers but my wife works in a pharmacy and she tells me you can just ask them for free sharps containers and also return them, sealed up and safe in the containers, in a plastic bag, for free.
