My first bit of advice is: Find a new friend because this guy doesn't know WTF he's talking about.
I think a better question to ask yourself is: What kind of cycling do
you want to do?
There are different types of cycling. Road, commuting, casual/leisure (Seawall type) trails/mountain biking etc.
Figure that out first and then maybe we can help you. For what its worth - hybrids are for everybody. Not just old people. All-round bikes usually end up being hybrids because they have somewhat of a performance ability while allowing the rider to keep things casual and to commute.
