the data gets routed through the power cable (hench the name Powerline)
So you need the main device connected directly to the modem (via ethernet) and you plug it into the socket, then you get another one that plug anywhere in the house through the socket and this one (either wireless or wired) gets connected to you device.
So basically its like the wireless routers idea, one in your computer and one connected to the ISP modem but instead of transmitting through air, its through the house powerline
