For the noob riders, only wave if you feel safe enough to do so. ie. Don't bother if your hitting the apex of a turn. If in traffic and squeezing the clutch, on a hill or something else a head nod will suffice.
Also, for those who don't already know, a rider tapping the top of his head/helmet with his hand means "police ahead". I've seen quite a few confused and bewildered looks after this one from some riders.
