Yikes, shitty question, especially with regards to small/mid cap mines.
If you like risk and are willing to roll the dice, play in gold land.
If your tolerance for risk is lower, go with silver, it's value is more based around the actual application of silver in the mfg sector... sure some of it's value is solely based on being a precious metal.. but compared to gold the value of silver is far more related to the ability of silver miners to sell their product to secondary producers of various products.
Now having said all that, the way I see it, unless you want to play it risky in gold, you're basically looking at Barrick/Goldcorp/etc.. but I question what sort of gain you might see from these giants.
Risky gold bets there is a huge range of companies lol... seems like half of the TMX.
Unbiased opinion... I can't help you, I personally like/hold YNG because I like that it's not some "hole in the wall" miner drilling core samples and hoping to land on some heavy OZ/T. It's basically a large scale mining facility that relies solely on how much ore it can run through the mill. They have spent the last couple years struggling through major repairs of the facility and are basically just now getting back up to full speed.. hopefully. They have other assets they could sell to free up capital (Which IMO they should do, and focus solely on the Elko mine), the current market cap is IMO well below the NAV and they would be a fairly good candiadate for a buyout from neighbor Barrick.
I did a fair bit of research before getting into YNG, it makes me happy to hold it, and I am very curious on a personal level to see if they can get back to black sooner than later... I suspect they can before the end of the year.
I am also somewhat bullish on gold, QE3 and ECB bailout should support the price of the gold for at least a couple years.
There are so many small cap miners that are sketchy :s
