I always thought GPA didn't have a big effect on jobs and such when I was in 1st and 2nd year. Boy, that was the biggest mistake I ever made. Stuck with a crappy/mediocre GPA now and pulling it back up is so hard.
You'd be surprised at the number of career options, companies, industries that place HEAVY emphasis on your GPA. A lot of companies and industries even have cutoff GPA's where they don't even LOOK at your resume if it's below a certain number. (eg: Consulting is usually 3.5+, best consulting firms like MBB are 3.8-4.0+). Of course, there's the very rare exceptions where people network their way into a big company, but for the majority of the people, GPA is one of the first things some employers look at.
Note: not all employers do, in fact, the majority don't, but having high GPA really opens up a lot more doors for you.
