but seriously, wine is down to very personal preference. Some wines that I think are awesome, might not jive as well for others.
Then there's wine pairings which is a whole another world. Like you'll find more bold wines will taste better when eating red meat like steak but if you drink it on it's own it won't be as smooth.
Here are a couple to get you kickstarted though, they are some of my faves from my personal collection:
Red
J. Lohr Seven Oaks - Cab Sauv
Jean Bousquet - Malbec
Whites
Mission Hill Reserve - Sauv Blanc
Dr. Loosen - Reisling
They are all roughly in the $20 ballpark so shouldn't break the bank either.

I brought a bottle of the J. Lohr to a dinner last night and everyone seemed to like it. Good recommendation.
