Although the rainman was different, he (looper) still killed himself. At the point which he killed himself, only the future him was there with him; There was no 'past him' with him. Had the 'past' him been there, the 'past' him could still live his life. If that makes sense. .
I know what you're trying to get at. Think about it in the context of the looper, and his future self being present. If his futureself had died, he could still live out his life. Same thing here, since no past-self was present his death meant total death. That's my take on it
What pissed me off is how the rainman didn't just let his mom down  I guess it would've made the ending way too simple.
