That can work sometimes, but if your car is say early 90's then a lot of times dealerships can't cut keys off the vin. They will need the actual cylinder from the car to copy or code a key to cut it. Lets not forget too most dealerships will need insurance papers to shown to prove that you own the car and aren't trying to get a key for someone else's car. In his case either way I doubt he had his insurance papers on him.
