I use iStat menus. Pretty awesome system status app, which gives you a snapshot of your system in the menu and extended details as a drop down menu. It even gives you the ability to set your fanspeed at a higher rate.
I have it on all my Mac's. Bought a 5 system family license around two years ago. It's a steal considering the daily use.
