So that means RC fido sold her a fucked up phone.

Did she JAILBREAK the phone?
Apple rep might have saw the Cydia app and said the "inside" (software) wasn't legit. They do not give warranty to jailbroken iDevices.
Connect it to itunes and either restore to a pre-jailbroken backup if you still have it.
Otherwise, do a restore from interwebs and it will download a fresh copy of IOS6 to it. Go back to apple and they wont know you had jailbroken it before.
