That is an absolutely ridiculous generalization. That's like saying "if you want the fastest car, get a turbo". It's not technically always wrong but it's certainly not a god given truth.
If budget wasn't a concern, the best LED TVs are now better than the best plasma TVs. Period. This is some good simple reading on the technical reasons why this is possible:

There have been some amazing plasma TVs over the years (think Pioneer Kuro) but the current 2012 lineup of LED products is pretty awesome. I have a 2011 Samsung 7000 series and I am very happy with it, I don't think I will upgrade until the new AMOLED products are affordable (read: not $10,000).
