I've driven a few times without my wallet (idiocy and forgetting to bring it with me). I typically don't carry my passport, but I do remember my DL# (easily memorized, luckily). I fully expect the fine if I'm caught without it and I wouldn't criticize anyone who forgot theirs.
Though especially when dealing with a passport I'm super paranoid and worry excessively when someone else has it.
