It holds the "joint" of the earpiece to the frame that goes on your head. This plate is easily broken just from sitting the headphones on your desk. The plate cracks and snaps off the screws, leaving the joint open to fall out, making the headset practically useless. I've rigged mine with tape, but it is unreliable.
I won't be buying another one.

seen more than a few of these reviews
on another note, my Sony's have a hidden mic and no annoying sick in my face. I can wear them outside and not feel like a reh-tard.
