48gb is from my Galaxy S3 promo, but I will still have over 25GB left when that expires in 2014. And I'm sure I can do other things to increase the space by then.

No, 2.5" drives (such as the Seagate Momentus pictured in the original) do not need extra power. USB power is enough. Also, why buy a new USB board when a new case (with the same functionality) is $7?
