No idea why you are experiencing the popping noise. Can you pinpoint where the noise is coming from if not from your speakers?

Actually, it would be because the graphics card is too old to support audio on the HDMI output. If you get a newer card with a regular HDMI slot (or one of those convertible ones) you would be able to output sound to the TV. I have done with AMD cards and with nVidia cards so it is doable.
For the popping noise... where is it coming from? Are the screws to hold the cable in fully tight?
