Star Trek and Transformers were both reboots helmed by Bay and Abrams. Fans new and old loved Star Trek. Fans new and old were at best yeah-I-guess-it's-not-bad-ed with Transformers.
Bay uses the story for the sake of explosions. Abrams puts explosions in his story.
