When it comes to audio, the first and most important question is: what kind of a budget are you looking to blow?
Given the same budget, audiophiles strongly prefer a quality stereo system over a multi-channel system, but with stereo only, you (obviously) lose out on multi-channel / positional audio aspect of things. But quality multi-channel systems cost an arm and a leg.
