Like he said, it depends on your suit cut. If you're wearing a suit with very trim(narrow) lapels, don't wear a wide tie, it'll clash and make you look bad. Same thing in the opposite direction; if you're wearing a traditional or wider lapel, don't go for a skinny tie. It makes you look fatter as the tie seems shrunken compared to your body/suit lines.
