Setting up my home gym was the absolute best decision I have made in 2013 (lol).

Power rack + 350 lbs in plates + olympic barbell = ~$700 after everything.
I already have a bench and some dumbbells (50lbs) that I got for about $90 a couple years back so in total my setup cost around $800.

The power rack allows me to do squats, deadlifts, bench press (using the pins/safety bars and my bench--works amazing) and weighted pullups.
I can also do rows, curls, good mornings, calf raises, skull crushers, and a plethora of other exercises you can typically do with just a barbell, dumbbell, and plates.

I've looked at gym memberships in the past and they were on average about $50/month. Depending on where the gym is located, you could be easily spending an additional $20-30/month on gas alone driving there and back 3-4x a week. After accounting for this I pretty much make back my investment after one year, sooner if you factor in one of the most important savings a home gym can provide: time. I used to workout at a community centre and the total time spent driving there and back was 40 minutes on a good day. Assuming I get home from work at 6, that means it's almost 8 by the time I get back (again, on a good day). Now, I simply walk to my garage, do my thing, and am usually back in time before the hockey game starts at 7.

Of course, if I were to get the powerblock or get more plates as I progress, things will be different costwise, but looking long term you still come out ahead if you invest in a home gym. Of course, if you don't have the space for a home gym then you don't really have a choice.

Just my opinion.
