At home, I use
TightVNC. It's a small application, and establishing connections are instantaneous with shortcuts. It'll work over the internet, too. You have to map ports, though. You can connect with the client, or use the java client via the web.
The only downside is that TightVNC doesn't stream video or sound. Splashtop does a great job with streaming full video, and games on your LAN.
