That's where you're wrong, and most other non-audiophiles. Source components are so much more important than speakers or headphones.
The same theory applies to upgrading a car. You purchased wider stickier tires but you don't have the power to actually put it to good use. It would make more sense if you increased your power output to actually utilize the upgraded tires.
If you run studio monitors off your built-in motherboard sound, it may not sound "bad," but it's definitely a complete waste. You HAVE to get better source components to take advantage of upgraded speakers/headphones.
