The same theory applies to upgrading a car. You purchased wider stickier tires but you don't have the power to actually put it to good use. It would make more sense if you increased your power output to actually utilize the upgraded tires.
If you run studio monitors off your built-in motherboard sound, it may not sound "bad," but it's definitely a complete waste. You HAVE to get better source components to take advantage of upgraded speakers/headphones.

i despise onboard sound, but at the same time i wouldn't spend $200 for a dac alone
i'd just get something like the schiit modi + magni for $200 (both a dac and an amp)
i under stand that a $200 dac may be better, but i can't justify myself paying an extra $100 getting a better dac when i can put that $100 in headphones/speakers or an amp
but hey it's all opinion based and at the end of the day
what im willing to spend and what you're willing to spend is different and what we look for is different too
