for gear that fit in my front load washer, i just throw it in there... my shoulders and elbows fit in fine. gloves too. if it's pretty bad smelling (like gloves can be), i presoak with an antibacterial dish washing detergent in a bucket, and then agitate it with my hands... then rinse, and put it through a normal cycle in the front loader.. comes out super fresh.

i have never washed pants as they have never smelled bad... I have removable lining for my shin guards so those are easy to wash. Honestly, if you air dry all the time, you shouldn't have to wash your gear more than once a year.
