one more important thing to note, is to make sure the housing is FULLY dried. let it dry for at least overnight. If you don't let it dry enough and use them, the heat from the light will oxidize the wet paint and bake the paint oxidization on to the lens of the headlights...
Actually, I did none of those things and mine work fine lol.
I knew the risks when I was being lazy and I lucked out...

That being said, if I was doing again, I'd do it properly like you said
