There are par 3 course which are longer than pitch and putts, then there are executive courses which are primarily par 3s & 4s. Some executive courses have a par 5 or two as well and the pace of play is more forgiving than a full length course. I would suggest hitting some executive courses in your area.
I would play Delta, Newlands executive (langley), North 9 at Surrey, Coyote Creek (Surrey), Mylora (Richmond) when I began.. still play Delta every once in a while.
