I'm extremely new at this and trying to get into golfing. I've taken a couple lessons many years ago and gone to the range quite a few times since.
I can hit mostly straight 90% of the time, and roughly gauged the distance that each iron can go. I've done a bit of reading online but that's about it. It's hard to take the first step into the "big league" (18-holes?)

I have a set of clubs I can borrow and as I learn more about clubs and get comfortable i would get my own set but don't want to invest that much in it yet as I'm not sure if I'll be in it for the long haul. I've been scared to go to a real course. Worried I will hold up anyone behind me and not sure about etiquette. I don't want to pay for expensive lessons, was hoping to kind of "learn as you go" as I am only looking to play extremely recreationally but the range is getting boring and obviously Pitch & Putt is not the same..... are there any beginner friendly courses around town that me and a couple of friends could go and play + sort of practice at the same time?
When is the best time to go as to not disturb the better players? We bring our own clubs and balls right?

Golf doesn't seem like a very noob-friendly sport, like even volleyball there are super rec-level leagues or you can setup a net anywhere and play with your friends of all levels... Golf .. Well I don't have 700 acres of grass in my backyard

Hey Deon

My advice would be to get a cheap set of clubs and get some lessons from a golf pro. The pro will be able to get you out on a regular course and teach you etiquette. Once you've had a dozen lessons or so and feel you enjoy the game enough to play it long term, invest in a set of custom fitted clubs that you like. They'll be able to match you up with the proper shaft flex, grips, lie, etc. for your swing.

The best time to go, in my experience, is later at night. Just go for 9 holes at around 5 PM, which gives you about 3 hours of sunlight. Not too many people are out at that time and, if you feel you're holding a group up, just allow them to play through.

If you come over to the island, let me know and I'll do a round with you.
