Maybe when you are getting a bit more mature, things like flowers and holding open the car door and going to the door are some of those "old-fashioned" ideas that still have some place in the world. It shows a little respect for her, and it shows you care a little more and it shows you are a gentleman, not a douche.

I give my significant other flowers all of the time, but on a first date, flowers are both impractical and are a little over the top. When I used to date, there were several things which made me stand out from the rest of the men in this city:
- I dressed like I cared: tucked in my shirt, shined my shoes, and always carried a blazer in the car
- My car was always clean, inside and out
- I wore cologne properly (one spray rubbed onto the wrists)
- Never swore on first dates and I always allowed her to finish her sentences
- Avoided slang and spoke using proper sentences
- Opened doors and minded my manners in general
Men are portrayed as slobs and blubbering fools in the media. Even in the heart of downtown Vancouver, men look disheveled 90% of the time. If you follow at least some of the tips above, you'll make yourself stand out.
