Sorry to quote quite an old post but just wanted to share my diy belt that I made 2 years ago. I did it when I was in Taiwan and there was a street vender/artist who was selling and teaching you how to make your own leather goods. He had a few quality leather to choose from and me and my cousin spent a good 3 hours there to make our belts and chat with the dude.
I didn't like the traditional round ends so I was like whatever I'll cut it slant and put a few studs here and there.
Best $30 I spend on a belt. I love how it looks now and I'm sure it'll last me several years more easily.
Here is how mine looks after wearing it EVERYDAY for 2+ years:
