It helps if both parties are on the same page re: gift giving. Maybe you're not into celebrating stuff and your SO is and then it turns into a big fight, or worse tears, because they think that you not buying things for them or celebrating your 15 day-iversary means you don't love them.

My SO isn't into celebrating stuff and is a very practical gift giver. I'm totally okay with this, because sometimes he brings me home peanut wontons from Chongqing unexpectedly and I feel like a friggin' schoolgirl. I also know that when he does buy me something, it's going to be something I need/want and will actually use. This also shows me that he gives a shit about my interests instead of treating me like a generic female who will love whatever the commercial told him I will.

That being said, some people really like impractical, pretty things - like candles with rings in them (seriously, dafuq?) - and so you just have to figure out what kind of person you're with and how they might interpret the kind of gift you give them.
