don't keep the key turned then.

seriously there is probably a system designed to shut off you starter once the engine is running. other wise the starter would try to crank the engine through your transmission while your engine is running. so if your transmission/crank is moving while the engine is on you really don't want to be engaging the starter which also moves the transmission/crank or your starter motor will probably get damaged.
