What's the benefit in circumventing the cap, for $212k potential cap space, when Cassels in all likelihood won't play this season? Gillis is shrewd and even a cheap-ass mofo, but I'm not seeing it personally. Maybe part of a sign and trade scenario, but I can't imagine Cassels' trade value to be really worth much at this point

Basically, bonuses only apply within the first 3 years of the contract and, if the player doesn't play in the NHL for at least 10 games, the main salary slides, but the potential bonuses do not.
Since the 3rd year of the deal would no longer have bonuses, it circumvents the CBA and the NHLPA likely took issue with it. It would not save any cap space unless that bonus were achieved.
The Canucks will have to re-do the contract without the bonus or wait until after the Canucks' season is over to sign him.
