Rich/smart girls dig mediocre/average guys and vise versa. You will never see a hot chick with a hot guy. They just seem to repel each other. Theoretically, it's because both crave the attention on their self image and neither will put out.
I don't know how your date went with her, but you probably had a chance if you tried.
If you're good looking, but don't have the education/wealth, you tend to draw girls that are mediocre in looks but very high in education/wealth.
It's something about a person that is looking for what they're missing, either better or worse.
