If one is consistently taking sick days, then it makes reasonable sense from employer perspective to ask for a note; however, if one takes 1 sick day in forever, it seems like a waste of time for employer/employee. OP would need to take time off work to get the note; whereas he can be working if the employer insists on the note...
In the end, every company is different. Some are more laid back in terms of policy than others.
