Anything using fiber optics is directional and has to be due to the technology behind it. This is due to the diplexer/multiplexer in there. I'm guessing that one is for splitting one source to two outputs.

If you use it the other way, the coding will mix into each other and get jumbled up so then the receiver won't be able to understand the information (audio). UNLESS of course you only have ONE source on at a time, and make sure the other one is not emitting any information at all.
