Writing 1&0 a few times over each sector is actually very energy intensive. Not to mention depending on how old is the drive, it might just get error'ed out before it actually able to finish the job. It is faster and cheaper to give a acid bath to the platters, and sell the aluminum for the casing for scrap. Scrap people like those casings because they are pure alloy, it is easier for them to process.
