I'm always surprised at how sharp the 40mm f2.8 (pancake) lens is... my preference would still be to use the 50mm f1.8 and stop it down (terrific sharpness at f2.2)... but if you are using a crop sensor body it's just too tight for indoor use like above... the 40mm is a perfect compromise.
