Thanks m3thods. Can't find the page I was looking at earlier (but it was also from Nikon's Q&A) and it told me the opposite.
Answers from nikonrumors.com and dpreview.com seems to be a mixed bag too. I wonder if this is a good summary?

Basically if I buy a lens from USA, if anything goes wrong during the first year, I can get it warranty in Richmond. The next 4 years have to be sent back from+to US.
