Personally if you've never done a track day and are a new rider the best place to upgrade you skills on the cheap is out at Pitt Meadows. Pitt Meadows Track Days | Good Times, Huge Track, Great People and a Sick way to spend the day! I'm usually out there helping as a safety rider. The bike and equipment requirements are relaxed and you can do the whole day for under $200.00.

I was actually about to advise the opposite in terms of going and getting lessons before you hit the ground running. Bad habits are more difficult to shake once you pick them up as opposed to starting with a clean slate, doing everything with proper technique the first time. It takes more work to backtrack and fix things.

It's just nice to have that reassuring feeling when you have no clue what you're doing out there.
