They were 50% owned by Gm since 1989. The 900's were free of GM influence until 1994, and the last real Saab was the 1997 9000. After that the cars are rebodied Opels/Vauxhalls with standard GM bin parts. In the 9-5's GM even took the previously bullet proof B series motors and "lightened" the internals (replaced with cheaper parts), got optimistic with the HP ratings (b234's made basically the same, but Saab listed the minimum hp they'd make under hot/heat-soaked conditions) leading to recalls and reliability problems.

TLDR; pre GM cars were already subject to sometimes questionable reliability but at least they had great motors, post GM influence do not touch with a 10 foot pole.
